THE CATWALK PROJECT
The “Catwalk Project” is a competition for designers and model groups/agency, being hosted by SaViD Productions in Atlanta, GA. With this city’s up and coming industry in fashion, it’s the perfect time to find out who’s the best in Atlanta. This unique competition was created by SaViD’s owner Ronita Morsell.
Ronita was born and raised in Prince George’s County, MD. She went on to Baltimore, MD to attend Morgan State University and Johns Hopkins. After receiving her bachelor and masters degree, she decided that it was finally time to move on. A new resident to the south, she wanted to see what she could bring to the table. I met with her recently for a sit down to find out more about the “Catwalk Project” and who Ms. Morsell is.
Q: So, Ronita what exactly is the “Catwalk Project”?
A: It’s a competition for designers and model groups or agencies that have models they want to enter.
Q: So are the designers and model groups working together as a team?
A: No. The designers and model groups are in a competition of their own. What I did was put two competitions together in one show for one purpose…the finale.
Q: So what would a competitor get out of the competition?
A: Well the winners of both categories will win 500 in cash, a photo shoot of their pieces (designers) or group (models), radio interview, article in QU mag as well as on our website. We even have a couple of stations interested in the idea so they get to be a part of the pitch.
Q: That sounds like a great opportunity! What makes the “Catwalk Project” different from “Project Runway” or “Next Top Model”?
A: This competition is different because it’s more about the creativity of the models and the execution of the designers. Throughout the majority of the competition, they are not being judged by a panel of people. They are being judged by their peers. The shows judging are audience based, people vote on the site and it ends with a fashion theatrical production instead of a runway show.
Q: So, the more people you know the better chance you have at winning.
A: In a way. However, creativity still plays a part in getting you to the judgment round.
Q: Now you said the competition would end with a fashion theatrical production. What is that?
A: It’s a theatrical production that has everything in it. There is singing, acting, dancing, and modeling in one show. It’s going to be an exciting new thing for Atlanta to see. I know they ready for it.
Q: Alright, well I can’t wait. I’m excited just hearing about it. Where can designers and model groups enter the competition or get more information?
A: Visit www.catwalkproject09.com or hit the link the QU mag site.
It was very nice interviewing Ronita. She had a wonderful spirit and we wish her well as we follow along behind the “Catwalk Project”. It’s sure to be a success.
“We need to internalize this idea of excellence. Not many folks spend a lot of time trying to be excellent”--Barack Obama.
